a painting for Papi
February 24, 2021
I was listening to Sleeping Lotus by Joep Beving when the inspiration for this painting came about. I listened to the song repeatedly as I wrote it:
I think of rain, you drive silently on our
way to the theater.
When we arrive, you unbuckle my seat belt
You pick me up out of the car, and we hold
hands as we walk inside the theater.
You’ve been seeing a trailer for a cartoon movie, and
thought I’d like it.
So here we are.
I’m jumping up and down as you grab the popcorn; I’m
still holding your hand.
I stare up at you to see if you’re excited as much
as I am
Your raised eyebrows reassures me.
We take our seats, you nod off although the movie
hasn’t started.
It’s been a long week.
I lay my head on your shoulder as the film
begins.
